What news, oh riders from the fringe! What news do you bring from the Wylde Lands? Do the men and women who dwell there still trade in steel and cunning? Do the magics still run wyrd and wyld; where a gemstone is worth more to a mystic than a noble? What news!?

We bring news of dangers and horrors; venerable relics and lost secrets long buried in the roots of mountains or the hearts of forests. Creatures fair and foul not seen within our borders in an age. Cities, ancient and terrible, that lay as dust-strewn ruins populated by peoples who would slit your throat for a copper.  Wary should be the man or woman who travels there, for if they do not find their riches buried in the ancient past, they will instead find the ready-made grave of a forgotten tomb.

~ Conversation attributed to a royal company and a watchman upon their return from the Wylde Lands

Wylde Lands is a quick-to-learn, classless RPG game that is simple enough to play as a one-shot, but with enough depth to run a campaign. It is inspired by previous works such as Knave by Ben Milton, and Cairn by Yochai Gal, but has been expanded while still remaining compatible with B/X and other OSR retro-clones.

Currently the game sits at 40 pages which includes:

  • Streamlined Character Creation: A simple 3d6 system to create your basic attributes, combined with Cairn's excellent background and traits system makes for fast creation
  • Item Slots Inventory: A simple item slot system makes it easy to know how much space you have left in your pack. Combined with a variable size system of Small, Medium, and Large items makes it so that a 10 pack of chalk feels more realistic rather than absurd since it is no longer the same size as a tent.
  • Attribute Checks: Don't have a good idea on how to bribe the guard, but you think your Charlatan character would? Attribute checks allow you to play "character knowledge" when the "player knowledge" is lacking.
  • Variable Difficulty Classes: This allows you to set levels of difficulty on the fly, or just keep things consistent if you're not certain.
  • Rules for Food: Food now does more than just fill your belly. Eating a hearty meal at a tavern can restore lots of health, while trail rations on the road may not.
  • Random Magic: Spells are a combination of Elements, Arts, and Conduits, inspired by the excellent Witchery by Levi Kornelson. Use Augments to enhance your spells, and Controls to prevent them from going wyld. Every spell cast is a risk, but if calculated correctly is a powerful tool
  • Maneuvers and Stances: Make your combat more exciting with Maneuvers and Stances. If you've trained with a specialist, you can now set up a parry, feint, trip, or more by rolling your Maneuver Die in order to bring the fight to a swift end, or set up a surrender. You can also change your Stance to more Aggressive or Defensive, applying bonuses to attacks or defense.
  • Downtime Rules: Spend your money on more than just booze; updated downtime rules include philanthropy, researching new magics, or even offering thanks to the local gods.
  • Unified Random Tables: Rather than a new random table for every item, many of them have been grouped together into one with the addition of modifiers. All weather, regardless of season, is now on one table. Encounters, Foraging, and even Dungeon Delving are now a d6+modifier.
  • Detailed Dungeon rules: If you don't have a pre-prepared dungeon, don't worry. A list of random tables can help you generate a dungeon, encounters, and other dangers on the fly.
  • One-page Treasure Generator
  • Paragon Rules: Want to run a scenario by yourself first? Now you can. Rules for running games, encounters, and even dungeons by yourself for yourself.
  • Bestiary: A compiled list of some of the highlights of Basic Fantasy RPG's beasts. All have been edited to include the abstract movement ranges
  • Reference Sheet
  • Character Sheet
  • Hexcrawl Sheet

If you end up enjoying the game, shoot me a message and let me know what you liked or didn't like! I would love to read any and all playtest reports, as well as suggestions for improvement.

Hello there Sir, just wanted to say, I saw your dev log and thought the artwork looked evocative so I came to check it out. While I don't have time to try it out right now, I wanted to say that I am also working on a physical rpg, so from one game dev to another, I hope you gain immense satisfaction out of this.

God bless
